November 2023 – Update
National Popular Vote bill is filed in the Florida Senate
Senator Torres has filed the National Popular vote Bill in the Florida Senate. It’s assigned SB236 and is exactly the same as HB67 filed by Representative Michael Gottlieb and co-sponsored by Representatives Harris, Hinson, Skidmore, Valdés.
During the week of October 17-19, Leader Fentrice Driskell hosted a Lunch and Learn in Tallahassee that featured Representative Gottlieb talking about why he sponsors this legislation and National Popular Vote subject matter expert, Pat Rosenstiel spoke about how Minnesota passed the bill this spring after 13 years’ effort with bi-partisan support.
The Floridians for NPV team was there for the event and spoke with 20+ legislators and their aides about the bill and its benefits. Several committed to co-sponsoring the bill as well.
Save the Date: Learn More about NPV December 6 @ 5 PM
No one wants the candidate who loses the popular vote to become President of the United States, which is entirely possible with the current statewide “winner take all” system.
In 2006, the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact was introduced. It’s an elegant solution to ensure that the candidate with the most votes in all 50 states wins the presidency. Learn how this works without a constitutional amendment.
The LWVFL is offering the opportunity for Floridians for the National Popular vote to do several presentations during the next year, sponsored and promoted by the LWVFL, to “spread the word” and educate League members and other Floridians about NPV.
Suzanne Low, the NPV team leader for LWV Collier County and District Chair of Floridians for the National Popular Vote, will present “Deciphering the NPV”. Register to learn more and join us December 6 from 5-6 PM. The League is welcoming anyone interested in attending, so invite your friends and colleagues to sign themselves up too!
