May 2023 – In The News
In the News
Floridians for National Popular Vote supports passage of the NPV Interstate Compact across all of America. We track what’s happening nationally and bring you this summary, so you can understand the progress we are making even though there is so much other important content. In a chicken or the egg scenario, if we elected the president by popular vote, would we have such political divisiveness? Or would a nationally elected president be moderate enough to squelch the radicals on both sides? This is the existential question.
Florida

Let’s start with Florida and the 2023 Legislative session that’s just ended.
This session saw a tsunami of huge policy changes, most backed by Gov. Ron DeSantis before his expected presidential run. The legislative session is over. Here’s what passed, here’s what died.
Minnesota

Moving on to Minnesota, where the legislature is poised to vote in both chambers and the secretary of state is a proponent of NPV. NPV passed the Minnesota House on April 18, 2023.
Michigan

Bi-partisan support in Michigan
If there is one thing former Michigan Democratic Party Chairman Mark Brewer and former Michigan Republican Party Chairman Saul Anuzis want to make clear, it’s that “every voter matters” in a presidential election.
Nevada

On May 9, 2023, the Nevada Senate Committee on Legislative Operations and Elections approved the National Popular Vote interstate compact by a 3-2 vote (status of AJR6).
You may recall that the legislators in Nevada passed NPV in both chambers, but the governor didn’t sign the bill. This is another attempt.
Alaska

Progress in Alaska! NPV is heard in committee.
On May 2, 2023, the Alaska Senate State Affairs Committee approved the National Popular Vote bill
(status of SB61) after holding hearings over two days. The bill is now in the Senate Rules Committee.
Our grassroots advocate in North Carolina, Susan Fisher, wrote an op-ed for the Citizen Times.
A great explanation of National Popular Vote and why it’s needed is in this video.
