Julio 2024 Update Floridians for National Popular Vote

Floridians for National Popular Vote participated in the League of women Voters US Convention in Washington DC on Julio 27-30 where Celina Stewart was elected CEO.

The LWV National Convention launched the “One person, one vote” moonshot to elect the president by popular vote. The first step is implementing the National Popular Vote which has already passed in 17 states and DC amassing 209 electoral votes of the 270 needed to go into effect.

While a constitutional amendment that will repeal the Electoral College is the end game, it is much more difficult to pass Congress and get the states to ratify.

The League of Women Voters Florida was the largest state contingent and was led by co-presidents Cecile Scoon and Debra Chandler . Floridians for National Popular Vote, co-chaired by Kathleen Crampton, had several members present at Convention wearing buttons, hats and sandwich boards to drive our message home.

The first evening kicked off the weekend with a panel discussion reflecting on the history of the Electoral College and women’s suffrage. After that panel, Kathleen Crampton presented the value of the National Popular Vote initiative and why it should be the League’s focus for the immediate future. Her comments were enthusiastically supported by the attendees.

Floridians for National Popular Vote led a workshop with League representatives of five states (Minnesota, Maine, Michigan, North Carolina, and Wisconsin) who discussed how to get National Popular Vote passed in more states. There were 200 live and virtual attendees. Support was strong throughout the convention.

Florida has been a leader of the National Popular Vote bill for 7 years, starting with the LWV Florida Speaker’s Bureau training subject matter experts about the Electoral College and the NPV. As Florida loses its status as a swing state, the National Popular Vote bill makes inroads. Floridians for NPV have had sponsored bills in the Florida legislature since 2017, with 2024 having 24 co-sponsors.

The LWV US has committed to send emails to every Convention participant asking them and their local Leagues to join a new nationwide grassroots effort within the League to pass the National Popular Vote bill in more states. This new grassroots organization will work across state lines to help other states pass the National Popular Vote.

Michigan with its 15 electoral votes is the next state expected to join the National Popular Vote. When they do, that will bring us to 224 committed electoral votes. Election of the president by nationwide popular vote goes into effect when states totally 270 electoral votes pass National Popular Vote.
